Automotive “Right to Repair” is now the law in Maine, but the devil is in the details, and those haven’t been ironed out yet.
The law is designed to make sure car owners and the mechanics they choose have access to critical diagnostic information to work on their cars.
Currently, with some vehicles, only the dealership’s service department can get access to that data, freezing out local mechanics.
In Augusta this week, a small working group met for the first time to establish some rulemaking processes.
The group consists of individuals from the Attorney General’s Office, the Secretary of State’s Office, members representing vehicle manufacturers, after-market parts manufacturers, distributors, retailers, car dealerships, independent repair facilities, consumer advocacy organizations, and data privacy groups.
The group will meet biweekly until they submit their final report and recommendations to the Legislature.
