Protecting Yourself from Excessive Demurrage Fees Amid Port Disruptions: ABPA Members Take Note

With recent disruptions caused by port strikes and labor disputes, such as the one involving dockworkers represented by the International Longshoremen’s Association, ABPA members are at greater risk of incurring excessive demurrage fees. These delays can lead to prolonged cargo hold times, driving up costs. Under the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2022, the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) offers a formal complaint process for disputing unfair fees. It’s crucial for members to document delays and charges thoroughly to protect against unwarranted financial losses.
