Today, President Donald Trump clarified the implementation timeline for new tariffs that will significantly impact the automotive aftermarket industry. As of March 4, 2025, the following tariff increases will take effect:
- 25% tariff on all Mexican imports
- 25% tariff on all Canadian imports (with a 10% tariff on energy imports)
- An additional 10% tariff on all Chinese imports, compounding the previous 10% increase from February, resulting in an effective 20% tariff on Chinese imports
Additionally, Trump announced that reciprocal tariffs will be introduced on April 2, 2025, though details on their scope and application have yet to be released.
The justification given for these tariffs is to curb drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, from Mexico, Canada, and China. However, the implications for U.S. businesses—including ABPA members—are substantial. These tariffs will increase costs for suppliers and distributors of aftermarket automotive parts, impacting pricing, supply chains, and competitiveness in the market.
The ABPA is actively monitoring this situation and engaging with industry partners and policymakers to assess the potential impact and explore possible actions.
